Arrival to Sofia, the capital and largest city of Bulgaria. The city is situated in the western part of the country. The city is surrounded by mountains and is home to various universities, cultural institutions, and commercial companies. It has been described as the “triangle of religious tolerance” due to the proximity of temples representing Christianity, Islam, and Judaism. Transfer to hotel, free time.
After breakfast, we will have the chance to see and get to know the history behind Sofia`s historical landmarks located in the centre. The capital of Bulgaria has preserved heritage from different cultures and epochs – Roman, Early Christian, Ottoman, Bulgarian, Soviet. The most popular sights are Alexander Nevsky Cathedral, the second biggest in the Balkans, Saint George Rotunda – the oldest church in the town, dating back to the 4th century and Saint Sofia Basilica – the medieval symbol of Serdica, built in the 6th century. Other interesting places that will be seen are the Parliament, the Roman Remains, the National Theater “Ivan Vazov”- one of the most beautiful buildings in the town, the former Royal Palace, the administration of the President, the mineral springs. Afternoon free for leisure, we suggest you to take a tour to explore the mouthwatering wines and cheeses of Bulgaria.
After breakfast, free day to explore Sofia on your own or OPTIONAL Plovdid Day Trip from Sofia. The phrase “You must see Plovdiv to see Bulgaria!” truly describes this experience, and there is so much to explore in the country’s second-biggest city. Plovdiv (160 m a.s.l.), a 2-hour drive from Sofia, is situated in the western part of the fertile Thracian Valley. It is one of the oldest European towns contemporary to Troy and Mycenae. With about a 2-hour walking tour, you will learn about its intriguing history while exploring the charming historic quarter of the city – a fabulous architectural ensemble of beautifully decorated 19th-century houses, the ancient fortress walls, magnificent churches, and Roman structures like the 7000 seater theatre and 30,000 seater stadium.
Will admire the Old Town of Plovdiv, where art, culture, and history collide to create an unforgettable experience. Return to Sofia late afternoon.
After breakfast, free day to explore Sofia on your own or OPTIONAL 7 Rila Lakes and Rila Monastery full day tour
We will depart in the morning and head to Panichishte in the beautiful Rila National Park. We will ride the chairlift to the 7 Rila Lakes, where we will get free time to go on some amazing nature walks independently to experience the glacial lakes from different perspectives.
Then we will head on an 2-hour drive to Rila Monastery in a deep valley of the Rilska River. Founded in the 10th century, the monastery complex is regarded as one of Bulgaria’s most important cultural and historical monuments. We will explore the largest Eastern Orthodox monastery in Bulgaria. Return to Sofia in the evening.
